Easy Homemade Muesli

I can feel spring! I love spring – it’s the best season in my opinion. But – wait. I’ve been eating some pretty rich dishes, and if I’m honest, it’s starting to show. Time for a body spring clean!

I really enjoy making this muesli. Healthy cereals are so expensive in the shops, and often full of sugar, and while mine has honey and dates in it, I know how much goes in the meusli, and, of course, if you’d like, you can leave it out altogether.

Like most of my dishes, there are few ingredients in this muesli that can’t be omitted or swapped if you’d prefer. Don’t like coconut? Use a few dried apricots or pieces of crystallised ginger instead. Run out of chia? Pop in a couple of pine nuts instead! The idea of the recipe is that you use ingredients that you love, that all have health benefits and that work well together.

Easy Homemade Muesli

Ready in 20 minutes. Serves 6-8


  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup sunflower seeds
  • 1/2 cup coconut flakes
  • 1/2 cup cashew nuts
  • 1/2 cup pitted dates, quartered
  • 1/4 cup goji berries
  • 1/4 cup cacao
  • 1 heaped teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons runny honey


Preheat oven to 160°C.

In a heavy-based frying pan, toast oats on medium heat until lightly browned (don’t let them catch) Add sunflower seeds, cashew nuts, dates, berries and cacao and stir through.

Sprinkle cinnamon over the mix, and stir to combine. The mix should be warm but not hot (you’ll hear the sunflower seeds popping).

Spread mixture evenly onto a roasting tray and drizzle honey lightly across the mixture. Roast for 10 minutes.

Remove from oven, leave to cool and serve. Store the remainder in resealable jars.
