That’s it – I’ve had enough. Just as I thought winter was over, here comes that nasty chesty cough that’s plagued us this season. Time to bring out the big guns!
I started making this simple 5-minute recipe a couple of years ago when I couldn’t shake the bronchitis that wracked every inch of me for weeks; now everyone in the family requests one as soon as the first signs of a cold hit!
This version has garlic and whisky in, making it a great drink to sip just before bedtime, but if you need to be out and about, and don’t particularly want garlic breath, just go hard on the ginger, and save the garlic version for later.
Ultimate Flu Buster Shot
Ready in 5 minutes. Serves 1
- 1 teaspoon manuka honey (the higher the UMF*, the better
- 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
- 1cm cube fresh ginger, grated
- 1/2 clove garlic, grated
- 1/2cm cube fresh turmeric, grated
- Freshly-boiled water
- 1 shot whisky (optional)
In a small heat-resistant shot glass, mix the honey and lemon juice. Add just enough hot water to melt the two together and stir, adding the ginger, garlic and turmeric as you stir.
When all your ingredients have melted together (the spices won’t melt, but you’ll be able to smell them once they have heated), top up the shot glass with water or whisky, stirring constantly.
Sip slowly, adding more hot water and/or lemon as required.
