I’m quite picky when it comes to ice cream. I can’t bear the gloopy stuff that actually bears no resemblance to delicious ice cream, and some have tonnes of artificial preservatives that leave a horrible taste in the mouth.
I was a bit late coming to the Kohu Road ice cream and sorbet party – but I’m so glad I’ve discovered it now. This brand-new range of eight flavours really delivers on flavour – and they are all dairy free, lower in calories and fat free.
I have no idea how they’ve done it, but Kohu Road’s range ticks a lot of boxes for those with food intolerances. The four ice creams – Vanilla, Chocolate, Green Tea and Strawberry are all made with coconut cream instead of dairy; and the four sorbets – Passionfruit, Mango, Blackcurrant and Dark Chocolate are all vegan-friendly.
The ice creams are already officially winners – the Strawberry flavour won Best Non-Dairy category at the 2017 NZ Ice Cream Awards, while Vanilla took gold in Non-Dairy.
“We wanted to cut out the dairy so we could make ice cream healthier without losing the flavour that we really pride ourselves on,” says Kohu Road founder Greg Hall. “It has less calories, sugar and fat than traditionally-made versions, but there are no additives, preservatives or stabilisers. It’s taken us over 3 years to perfect but we’re delighted to have created something that’s ice cream identical in the way it looks, tastes and feels, but is 100% dairy free.”
As well as being made with coconut cream, the new range has reduced sugar, due to the use of monk fruit – a natural sweetener that’s 200 times sweeter than sugar. The new collection also caters to most special food requirements, being gluten free, halal and kosher.
The new dairy-free ice cream is available in 500ml tubs, RRP $12.99, from Farro Fresh. Select flavours will be making their way into New World, Fresh CHoice and Countdown stores from November 13th.
