Breakfast just got way better – in every way!

I really struggle to find a breakfast that suits the family. My husband Trev is always in a hurry to get out the door in the mornings so often ends up skipping breakfast, my daughter hates the idea of food before about 11am, and my son really needs fuel that will keep him going for more than 5 minutes! So finding something that really works is a real bonus, especially for Trev. He’s a big guy, and at 50, like all of us, he needs to be eating foods that keep him healthy.

When I was sent the new Harraways Oat-activ® to try, I didn’t hold out much hope, to be honest. Carb-heavy breakfasts often gives Trev heartburn and make him feel heavy, he says. So I asked him to give these a go for a week – and he’s hooked! Not only does he absolutely love the taste, but it’s the first breakfast he’s had in a long time that makes him feel great, and not be tempted to snack. And it’s good for his cholesterol and blood pressure – double bonus!

New Zealanders have some of the highest average cholesterol levels in the world and its estimated 90% of Kiwi adults could benefit by lowering their blood cholesterol.  High blood cholesterol can cause cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in NZ including heart, stroke and blood vessel disease.   Every 90 minutes a New Zealander dies from heart disease – many of these deaths are premature and preventable. (Heart foundation website: https://www.heartfoundation.org.nz/statistics ).

With Oat-Activ, Harraways developed a natural, ‘double-action’ solution to help lower blood cholesterol and help Kiwi heart health. Harraways Oat-activ ® is a new fortified, single serve oats mix – a New Zealand first for hot breakfast cereal. It delivers a ‘double action’ in reducing blood cholesterol levels via the addition of natural plant sterols, combined with beta glucan (a soluble fibre, naturally occurring in oats). Both plant sterols and beta glucan are scientifically proven to reduce cholesterol absorption based on daily intake of 3g of beta glucan or 2g of plant sterols. The Harraways Oat-activ ® range comes in two flavours – Original and Cranberry.

During a recent non-clinical trial of Oat-activ ®, facilitated by Dr Kelly Dale (Lifecare Nutrition), 4 out of 6 participants lowered their total cholesterol by an average of 7.75%, and their LDL (‘bad’) cholesterol by an average of 11.8% over an 8 week period.

“Harraways is investing in the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders with Oat-activ ® and its holistic program. It is great to see companies like Harraways contributing to the ‘bigger picture’ of positively influencing heart health by developing products such as Oat-activ ® that tackles an issue like high cholesterol.  It’s the importance of many components working together to help an individual be healthy and reduce their risk of having a heart attack or stroke”, says Dr Kelly Dale.

For best results it is recommended two Oat-activ ® sachets are consumed per day. This is easily achieved at breakfast time and during the day as a snack or smoothie. Delicious recipes can be found on Oat-activ ® packs, or on the Harraways website www.harraways.co.nz , Facebook or Instagram @HarrawaysNZ.
