BRB celebrates winter with two new craft brews
I love a good beer. While at the moment I’m back on the sofa recovering after what I hope is the last operation of many on my femur, a good beer to me represents the end of a good day, usually outdoors – it’s clock-off time.
I’ve really enjoyed watching the growth of the craft beer industry in New Zealand over the past few years. Suddenly we aren’t just being offered the usual stuff – there are some really tasty new offerings out there, and Boundary Road Brewery is behind quite a few of them.
The craft beer company BRB started in 2011 in the Hunua ranges, and they’ve produced some real delights since then. Following the release of BRB’s Double Crossed Double Lager and the limited-release Hawaiian Hopic Tropical Ale, the brewers have created two new limited-edition winter brews; Black Purl a mulled winter brew and Powder Hound, an extra pale ale.
BRB’s Black Purl is a mulled beer / barley wine inspired by parts of Northern Europe. Known as Grzaniec in Poland, and Glühbier in Germany it’s a brew that has been warmed with added honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and orange. The herbal infused hops, paired with a unique Belgian yeast, make this delicious brew the perfect fireside companion this winter. Staying true to Northern roots, Black Purl also includes a rather unique ingredient, Irish moss! Imported all the way from Ireland.
Powder Hounds are passionate (some might say obsessive) about seeking out the freshest, high quality powder (or snow). BRB is equally obsessed with quality and flavour, which is why they have created Powder Hound – an extra pale ale. While not quite as white as snow, it’s lighter than a pale ale with refreshing citrus flavours and a mild biscuit tone.
Kris Hansen, Brand Manager for Boundary Road Brewery says, “BRB is always tinkering with craft brews and recipes, to take them from good to great. These two seasonal release winter beers are the result of hours of tasting and refinement. Black Purl is the perfect way to warm up this winter, and Powder Hound is the ideal après-ski brew to quench your thirst after a hard day on the slopes.”
BRB’s head brewer Trevor Rollinson comments, “ Black Purl is a mulled dark Barley Wine that uses a range of specialty malts, subtle hops and a unique yeast. Its malty backbone is balanced out by some warming winter spices, making it a beer that’s been properly tinkered with.
Powder Hound sits at the opposite end of the spectrum, it’s all malt and refreshing with citrus aromas, and we’ve used a mix of Pacific Jade, Motueka, Nelson Sauvin and Liberty hops.”
Black Purl will be available for a very limited time from Friday 3 August from Chamberlain, 52 Tyler St, Auckland and at The Water Bar, 154 Ardmore Street, Wanaka. Powder Hound is available in six-pack of 330ml cans from all good liquor outlets RRP $14.99
